Filming
We started off filming me (playing Edie Sedgwick) trying on shoes in Debenhams. For these shots we had Jack film as we could see his reflection in the mirror so it looked like a home video. This was good because we didnt need to set up a tripod to keep it steady. We then moved on trying on hats and holding up clothes.
Moving out of the shop we went into Costca, the coffee shop. We had done a few shot but then our camera decided to die on us. BUT, luckily Jack had his camera with him so we borrowed his. Half way threw filming in Costca, me and jack went outside the shop and Shelley filmed us outside the window with an umberella as it was raining.
Now all we need to film is my boyfriend Jack Outtrim, playing Bob Dylan, lip syncing!

Audiences and Audience Theory
-Feminist film theory and audiences
Suture
-Classical Hollywood narrative and editing "sutures" or positions the audience in certain ways making only one preferred reading possible, however unconscious the audience is of that position.
Feminist Film Theory and Audiences
-Laura Mulvey
-Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (1975)
-Cinema reflects society
-Therefore cinema reflects a patriarchal society
-How does a patriarchal society manifest itself in cinema?
e.g.
-Patriarchy and phallocentrism are linked
-The phallus is the symbol of power
-Note how guns are used in films
-Guns = phallus = power
-The male mid-life crisis and phallocentrism
-The E-type Jaguar
The Gaze
-The "gaze" of the camera is the male "gaze"
-The male gaze is active, the female passive
-Within the narrative male characters direct their gaze towards female characters
-The spectator is made to identify with the male look, because the camera films from the optical, as well as libidinal, point of view of the male character
-Thus three levels of the cinematic gaze- camera, character and spectator- that objectify the female character (the triple gaze)
-Therefore the audience is constructed as though everyone was male
-Women are focused to look as though they were a male audience member
Agency
-In the classical Hollywood cinema the male protagonist has agency- he is active and powerful
-He is the agent around whom the dramatic action unfolds
- The female character is passive and powerless she is the object of desire for protagonist and audience
Erotic Desire
-Mulvey argues that women have roles in film:
- As an object of erotic desire for the characters
- As an object of erotic desire for the audience

Music Promo Videos
Name Of Artist: Gary Roberts
Name Of Track: Let Me Paint A Picture
Target Audience:
Older People 45+
Outline Ideas:
Edie's life involving money, love and drugs with Andy Warhole and Bob Dylan.
Conventions of the Genre:
Story Telling
Lip Synching
Playing Instruments
Certain Appearance
Research into Potential Target Audience:
We have chosen our audience to be older people because we think they will enjoy the genre the most. Soft rock and folk music isn't very popular with younger people at the moment so we chose it because we thought it would be a big task and if we do it properly then it could be very successful.
Proposal as to How to Expand Audience/Increase Sales:
As we already know we need to create a CD cover and a magazine cover (changed from a website) which is going to be alot easier seen as we are focusing on older people which are less likely to be on the artist's website. To increase sales, we could put our song on the radio because a higher rate of older people listen to the radio and therefore if they do see the song on T.V they are more likely to watch it as they have already heard it. We could create a website to draw younger people in, but I think after a few more songs this would be more relevent.
What resources will you need?
We will need 3 main actors and some other people to stand around. The main actors will play Edie, Bob and Andy.
We will need to have several settings such as a bedroom, an art gallery (but we will use and art room) a resturant and a shop.
For props we need expensive clothing, such as fur coats, hats, big earrings and dresses. We will need an extra video camera to show andy filming Edie. We was going to use syringes but we had second thoughts and decided it was completely irrelivent so we will just show her effected by drugs.

Reception Theory
This considered how texts were encoded with meaning by producers and then decoded (understood) by audiences
The theory suggests that:
- When a producer constructs a text it is encoded with a meaning or message that the producer wishes to convey to the audience.
- In some instances, audiences will correctly decode the message or meaning and understand what the producer was trying to say
- In other instances the audience will either reject or fail to correctly understand the message
Stuart Hall identified 3 types of audience readings (or decoding) of the text:
- Dominant- Where the audiece decodes the message as the producers want them to do and broadly agrees with it. E.g. watching a political speech and agreeing with it
- Negotiated- where the audience accepts, rejects or refines elements of the text in light of previously held views. E.g. Neither agreeing or disagreeing with the political speech or being disinterested
- Oppositional- Where the dominant meaning is recognised but rejected for cultural, political or ideological reasons. E.g. Total rejection of the political speech and active opposition.
Audience Theory
2. How does the audience consume texts?
3. What happens when they consume texts?
There are three threories of audience that we can apply to help us come to a better understanding about the relationship between texts and audience.
1. Effects Model/ Hypodermic model
2. The Uses and Gratifications Model
3. Reception Theory
Frankfurt School theorised in the 1920/30s that the mass media acted to restrict and control audiences to the benefit of corporate capitalism and government.
Case Study
Columbine High School Massacre
In 1999, a massacre took place at a high school in the US. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher, injured 21 others and another 3 were injured whilst trying to escape before commiting suicide. The boys were said to of consumed violent media text such as violent movies, video games, music (such as Maralyn Manson) and internet useage.
Earlier this year, two boys in England were planning the same plot but luckily were caught. They planned to bomb a shopping centre and go on a killing spree at Audenshaw School.
Severance
Simon Everitt was murdered based on a scene three boys had seen in Severance. One of the boys had said whilst watching the film "wouldn't it be wicked if you could actullay do that to someone in real life?!"

Effects Model
- The media produce inactivity, which makes us into students who won't pass their exams or "couch potatoes" who make no effort to get a job.
- The media produces violent "copycat" behaviour or mindless shopping in response to advertisements.
Uses and Gratifications Model
- Unclear that there is any link between the consumption of violent media texts and violent imitative behaviour.
- It is also clear the theory is flawed in that many people do watch violent text and appear not to be influenced.
- Therefore a new theory is necessary.
- Uses and Gratifications Model is opposite of effects model
- Audience is active
- Audience uses the text and is not used by it
- Audience uses the text for its own gratification or pleasure
- Power lies with the audience not the producers
- This theory emphasises what audience do with media texts - how andy why they use them
- Far from being duped by the media, the audience is free to reject, use or play with media meanings as they see fit
- Therefore audiences use media texts to gratify needs for:
- Diversion
- Escapism
- Information
- Pleasure
- Comparing relationships & lifestyle with one's own
- Sexual stimulation
The audience is in control and the consumption of the media helps people with issues such as:
- Learning
- Emotional satisfaction
- Relaxation
- Help with issues of personal identity
- Help with issues of social identity
- Help with issues of aggression and violence
- Controversially the theory suggests the consumption of violent images can be helpful rather than harmful
- The theory suggests that audiences act out their violent impulses through the consumption of media violence
- Audiences indignation towards violence is therefore sublimated, and they are less likely to commit violent acts.

Alison Jackson on Andy Warhol: The South Bank Show
I think the acting out of using drugs would look good in our video but I don't think we will do it because it seems very unnecessary and (although it won't) if it made it like a normal music video, it would be highly frowned upon. Also it seems very disrespectful to the artist as we interpret his song to be about drugs.

27th September - Photos

On Sunday, me and Shelley went to Romford and brought some props that we are going to use for or piece. After, we went back to mine and experimented with makeup and applyed false eyelashes (that took FOREVER!) to make me look like Edie. We then took some photos that we may use in the background of our video to make it look the factory with Andy Warholes work up on the walls.
I have edited a few of the photos and here are some of the examples.

Audience Theory
This Theory suggests the consumption of media effects (often adversely) the audiences. The audience is influenced, sometimes to replicate what they have consumed. Here the audience is passive and allows images to be "injected" directly to the brain and the audience is powerless to resist.
Case Study
Manhunt
February 2004 Manhunt was linked to the murder of Stefan Pakeerah, only 14 years of age. He was brutally murdered with a hammer and a knife that Warren Leblanc, 17, had mimicked from a violent scene from the video gme. Stefans mother called for the game to banned but only years later Manhunt 2 was released due to a higher demand for the first version being banned. Leblanc got sentanced to life.
I am using this case to see if violent and other disturbing images really are "injected" into our minds. I see how this could seem related to Pakeerah's murder but I don't believe that we copy everything we see on T.V, especially when it's indecent.
Childs Play 3
In 1993 two 10 year old boys lead 2 year old James Bulger to a train track where they violently harrassed him and left him for dead on the train track. This story shocked the nation and outragged most. A while later, the boys were said to have watched Childs Play 3. The film was then banned by politions. However, it is highly believed that it was only banned to cover up the failure of social services, as the young boys were from poor, neglected backgrounds. There was no evidence to prove they had even seen the film!
Again, there is no proof that the children had watched the film and even if they did, they should know by the age of 5, at the oldest, that what they were doing was completly wrong.
Albert Bandura
Albert Bandura created the Bobo Experiment. He put a model in a room with a Bobo doll and the model pushed it aound and beat it as some children watched it on a screen. They were then put into a room with their favourite toys that they were not allowed to touch. Next they were placed into a room with the Bobo toy and hammers. 88% of the children attacked the doll just like they had seen.
This experiment is again not proven. The children were made angry first and placed in a room with the doll. What else were they going to do with the doll? When they hit it, it bounces back up, IT'S FUN!

Carl Hauck
Also on the unsigned website on Hauck's page is the lyrics to his song. It is even better that we have the lyrics because then it is alot easier to learn. Looking threw the lyrics we see that there are many lines that could be interpreted in different ways. This makes it better for us when it comes to filming because we can choose what to act out and how to protray it and give it different meanings.
Lyrics
Dissociation
He eats turkey for tradition, not the taste,
uses old movie lines as he touches her face
figures everybody's got a lover on the big screen
prefers his love advice from old Jim Beam
'Cuz beauty's in an empty bottle
as long as its contents are traveling through his insides
She's just never tasted right, but there's cocaine on her lips.
It's sad to hear him claim a thing when he's never felt it.
It's hard for him to deal with those stages in between
when the logic kicks in called sobriety
'Cuz beauty's in an empty bottle
as long as its contents are traveling through his insides
Is there any cure for this second brain?
Is there any cure for this second brain?
What is true? Love or lust?
What is true? Love or lust?
Tell him what is true. Tell him what is true.
Tell him what is true. Tell me what is true.
'Cuz I'm lying to this thing you call God,
and I'm lying to your friends,
and I'm lying to myself again,
and I'm lying to you.

Unsigned.com
However, we need a song that not only is the right style but also has the right lyrics to match Edie's life. We want it be a folk/acoustic style just like Bob Dylan's style. I have looked on the website and have found some pieces that sound good but just aren't what we are looking for at the moment. If we cannot find a piece that suits our idea then we may have to alter it a little.

Edie Sedgwick

We are interested in acting out her life threwout the video and showing her life around Andy Warhol and her deepest love for Bob Dylan.

As Bob Dylan dedicated 2 of his songs to her, we decided to use his style of music to protray her life.
These songs would of been great to use but we can't use them because we can not use copy right music. We need to find soft rock/country/folk ballet that fits the style of Bobs songs. We also want to use an acoustic and get a male to play Bob Dylan singing the song and get another male to play Andy Warhol. I'm going to play Edie and show her tragic, short life. I'll be made up to look like her from the 50's to the 70's. I think if we use the right mise en scene, then our piece could really be pursuasive

Top 100 Music Videos
Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie
Musical Youth were the first Black group to appear on MTV with their hit single "Pass The Dutchie". The song was created as a cover version for "Pass The Kouchie" which was originally about the use of cannabis and meant "pass the cannabis pipe". This was addressing race and drugs.
Cornershop - Brimshaw of Asha
"Brimshaw of Asha" was banned after being accused of heavy advertising. They had record sleeves with "Cornershop" printed on them. They used the video to brainwash viewers into remembering their name so they bought there album.
Petshop Boys - Go West
Paul Greenhalgh said that the "Go West" video was "only an art form of commercial art." It was used to express free spirit and free mind.
True Faith - New Order
This video was completely meaningless but was great!
Godley & Creame - Cry
Godley and Creame had a brilliant idea of having all different people, they found walking down the street, appear in their video. They had them sit in a chair and have their heads all in the same position and lip sync. Once they finished the faces were mixed up to create different faces.
The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up
I love the video to this outrageous song because it's all done as a point of view shot. It's about drink, drugs and sex with a big twist at the end!!!

Meat Loaf - I Would Do Anything for Love
This used low key lighting to its advantage and created a depressing atmosphere. The mise en scene fitted the lyrics and really gave a sad vibe.
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares to You
This video touched alot of people. Sinead cries real tears in her video as she sang "All the flowers that you planted mama" because her mother had died not long before the video.
Queen - I Want To Break Free
The "I want to break free" video destroyed Queen in the USA. The members dressed in drag which was unacceptable at this time in the USA and so the sales of Queens records decreased significantly.
