Evaluation

1.

2. How effective is the combination of your main producy and ancillary texts?

The combination of my main product and ancillary texts is very good. I think the digipack is the most effective because of the pictures I used. Using the real picures from the video shows exactly what the song and video are about. It shows the genre of the song, the story line and attracts people who are interested in Edie Sedgwick, Bob Dylan or Andy Warhole. Also the quotes on some of the photos show the song is about love, life and death. From the survey we found that when people saw our digipack they automaticly thought of a a part from our video and visa versa. This shows that what I done was very effective because they will not forget what they have seen and would be more likely to notice the CD in a shop.

This is an example of another students digipack:

Compared with ours:

I love this students digipack. I love the idea they have used. I think the genre is obviously hard core rock. I love the photography they have used because it is very eary, giving it a dark vibe. The editing is great because it looks like there is cobwebsnd du all over the cover. This actually gives me shivers looking at it which is what I think they wanted to get across. I think we have the same aspects but in a completely different way. Instead of having a big band playing on our cover we decided to keep the soft feeling by showing the genre on the back, with the red guitar. As our song is about a love triangle we showed that on the front with the spotlight on Edie but also with her love Bob Dylan. This shows what our song is about, however looking at the other students cover I wouldn't be able to guess what their video is about. The font they used is a little bit too small to read which I don't think is very helpful when it comes to choosing and album. The problem with the font being too small is that it will not catch attention and if someone can not read the writing they may just put it back down, not knowing if they recognise any of the songs. Our font is big and bold. This works well because it is easy to read at the same time representing Edie's character.

The magazine advert is a little different to to the music video and digipack. It still works well but I think the colour of the font threw alot of people off. The tree represents the life and death of Edie, but it is only at the end that we see a tree and even then the focus is really on the bright lights. The advert is eye catching but doesn't make someone think of our song straight away. The picture of Edie is a very strong image and fits the images in our video with her face in a day dream. The font is the same font that is used on the digipack so people did think of the digipack, but not so much the music video.

This is done by the same student that created the digipack above:

And this is my advert:

Yet again I love this students advert. I love their idea with the doors open with the band inside. I think theirs is similar to ours on the basis that it has a slight relation to the digipack but isn't as effective. The picture with of the band is brillient and the boys standing outside the doors dressed casually show that maybe the hard core rock may be a little bit old school too because they look like they practising after school. Once again though, the font is too small. They also have very little information about the album, such as when is it out and what are its ratings. From my survey somebody said that the placement of our words could of been better. To be honest I'm not sure where else it could of been placed but compared with the other students advert I think they have good placement of their words.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Using http://www.surveymonkey.com/ we done a survey on our music video. The majority of respondents were female but we had a few males too. Their ages were between 15 and 25. Unfortunatly none of our respondents were into our chosen genre, folk. However this can be seen as a good thing if they are interested in our video. The majority of people enjoyed our song choice because of the lyrics which shows we chose a good song with meaningful words. When asked who did they think our music video was aimed at the highest result was teenage girls, which shows we did a good job at targeting our audience. When asked if they would personally buy our single the results were a close split 6 saying yes and 5 saying no. This is OK though I don't feel offended because as we saw before, none of our respondents were interested in folk music so to have some people even say they would buy it shows that we didn't do too bad a job. Most people found our song relaxing, which is very strange seen as it is about a famous person torn between fame and love that ends up dying on an overdose. I don't feel like people really knew what to say on this question and therefore wouldn't use this question again. Does the video match the music? 100% said yes! This is great feedback for us because it means we fulfilled our task. We had lots of different opinions when asked what they enjoyed best. A few people loved the home made video footage and the 60's vibe we gave it. Others loved the fact we based it on Edie and represented her really well and showing how tragic her life was. And finally we asked if they new anything about Edie before our video, the majority said no.

We asked what people thought of our advert and every response was good with the additional praise for camera work and the thought we put into it. The majority of people thought it was aimed at teenage girls, which was our main target audience when creating our advert and digipack along side out video. This shows our advert works well with our video because it is attracting the right audience. Once again the majority of people thought it was effective and would consider buying the CD. When asked what we could improve on we had lots of different opinions. Half of the replies said nothing but others said how we could of added more colour, (which we could of done but decided to keep it looking gritty). They also said the font could be placed better and the green font doesn't match our advert, which are very fair comments.
Again, using surveymonkey.com, we asked what were the first thoughts of seeing our digipack and the responses were all really positive. When we asked if we represented Edie Sedgwick well we had all our respondents say yes, apart from 1 that later explained in another answer that they wasn't sure who Edie was. This shows that the photos we used were very strong and show the different parts of her life just like the video. When we asked if there were any pictures that stood out the most, the front cover and guitar got alot of praising along with the picture with Edie and bob on the left with the writing sayin "love never dies". The majority of people rated it a 5, being the highest. When we asked for any improvments, we only had 1 which said that we should of put her birth date, the date she died and her claim to fame inside. I think that was a very good idea! Another respose said we didn't need any improvments and it was very good and related well to the magazine advert without looking too similar!

4) How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Our idea for our video requested alot of research. As we was basing it on Edie Sedgwick we needed to get a feel for her life, her attitude and her look. We began by watching the film "Factory Girl". This helped us pick out important parts in her life and how she reacted to people and drugs. From the filmed we chose to focus on the drugs, but we changed it to drinking problems too because we didn't want to show the use of drugs. We also wanted to show he relationship with Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan. We needed to make a clear how she felt about both men so we needed to chose the right song.
Researching Edie's look was very easy as she was a model for Andy Warhol. Searching her up on the internet we found lots of photos of her modeling and normal, everyday snapshots. This was helpful so we can show what she looks like modeling and how she looks like "backstage". As I was playing her I needed to tie my hair back so it looked short, apply a beauty spot and do my eyes up with black makeup.

We took some modeling pictures with my camera before we filming, because we thought we could use them and also wanted to get some ideas of what kind of modeling Edie done so we can apply it to our video. With these photos we edited them to look old and used 1 for the ending of our video on the newspaper article.
When planning, we knew what we wanted our video to be based on but we needed the right song. We looked at Bob Dylans music using http://www.youtube.com/ and decided that folk/acoustic style would be the best genre because thats what Bob plays. On http://www.unsigned.com/ we found a few songs that we liked until we clicked onto Gary Roberts. We was actually drawn to his photo as it was of him and a guitar. It was very simple but it was simular to Bob Dylan's photos. When we heard "Let me paint a picture" we looked no further and decided THAT was the song! I then used my hotmail account to email Gary to ask for his permission which i got within a few days.
Listening to the words they matched the life of Edie. The idea of painting a picture was ironic because Andy was an artist. It then goes on to sing about being high, and Edie was taking drugs. When filming we decided to copy alot of scenes from "Factory Girl" so chose to film in shops, a bed room and a cafe. Our plan was to capture Edie being happy and going downhill right before Andy's eyes, and have him filming her still. We wanted the lip syncher to look like Bob Dylan so we chose Jack Outtrim as he has the same hair style. This also made ideas much easier because he is my boyfriend the romance wasn't hard to show. We chose Jack Stone to play Andy Warhol also because of the blond hair but because he wouldn't let us spike it up we had to work harder to make it clear who he was.
Using the HD camera wasn't too hard because we worked with one last year. Shelley wasn't completely confident on using it but once I showed her the basics and suggested some shots she was fine. The tripod does come in handy but for alot of our video we wanted to do it hand held to give it the home video effect. This was difficult because sometimes our shots were too shakey that it was hard to see what was going on. We overcomed this problem by reduing most of the takes.
When editing we used iMovie on the iMacs. We used these last year, but still after being off of them for a year it took some tome to get used to. I did alot of the computer work when it came to editing as Shelley did not feel confident on doing it so she sat with me and we discussed what to do and then I would do it. When we first started we thought it would be clever to put all the lip synching in first, little did we know that when we add the rest of the clips it would throw it out of synch. This was very frustrating and made us lose confident in using iMovie as it also disappeard of the screen several times, losing all our work that we had to redo.
When it came to creating out advert and digipack, me and Shelley went out with the schools digital camera that we have never used. It didn't take too long for me to work out how to take, view and delete photos and Shelley picked it up quickly too. Uploading them onto the computer was alot easier than we thought. Once the box came up I highlighted them and copyed them into our folder.
Then...came the editing. Photoshop. The hardest programme I have ever tried to understand! I spent 3 lessons trying to work out how to use it until we asked if we had to use photoshop and was told we didn't have to. This is when we decided to use http://www.picnik.com/. I have used this many times before and so had Shelley so it was so much easier. The only problem I had was that I'm not very creative when it comes to pictures so I found it difficult to make any picture look professionally edited. This is the reason why Shelley done the magazine advert. However, watching her edit some pictures for the digipack I really wanted another try so I chose some pictures and edited them. I don't think they are as good as what Shelley has done but they are very effective when looking at our video.
The final piece of new technology I used was http://www.wordle.net/
